The Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Zarzuela has cared for over 11 million people and has become one of the best hospitals in Spain

The Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Zarzuela has 30 years' experience providing care to its patients and has become a benchmark of excellence in Spain. “We have been building the best hospital in our ry for 30 years and I would like to thank all the professionals who have formed part of the history of the centre in its first 30 years, as well as the over 11 million patients who have entrusted their health to us. They have turned us into a benchmark of care excellence in our ry", explained Jesús Bonilla, general manager of Sanitas Hospitals, Our Services and PPPs.

The centre, which opened its doors in 1985, is the best example of how developments in medicine have made it possible to progress in care quality. Excellence is the result of good work, recognised by the most rigorous and demanding international standards. The Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Zarzuela is one of the few centres in Europe simultaneously to hold the Joint Commission International accreditation and the quality certification of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) which, this year, also recognised the hospital with the EFQM 2015 European Excellence Award. The centre has also obtained all the ISO quality certifications applicable to the healthcare sector: ISO 9001 on management model, ISO 14001 on the environment, ISO 14064 on energy management, ISO 50001 on carbon footprints and ISO 170001 on accessibility. “Furthermore, last week we learned that the Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Zarzuela is one of the top 5 private centres in Spain in terms of reputation, according to the Merco index”, added Bonilla.

The hospital also carries out teaching work ranging from undergraduate training, through the Agreement with the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria, to the training of resident medical interns in the specialisms of gynaecology & obstetrics and paediatrics.

Comparison with the best

The level of the centre's self-imposed standards and its desire to offer patients the most adequate medical alternative for their health problem has led the hospital to cutting edge of medical practice and to compare itself against the Spanish hospitals with the best results. From this comparison, it can be seen that the Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Zarzuela has 7% more surgery without admission, which means that patients benefit from more advanced laparoscopic techniques and return to their normal routine in less than 24 hours, affording them much greater comfort and much more safety in the care process. With respect to the mortality rate, the centre is 28% below what would be expected in accordance with the complexity of the cases with which it deals. It should be reminded that the centre boasts all the surgical specialisms, such as heart surgery, thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, etc. That is to say, the centre cares for patients with problems 11% more complex and obtains better clinical results while dealing with more difficult situations.

Moreover, the hospital obtains a re-admission rate 5% below the average of the group of hospitals with which it is compared, and 18% fewer complications. This result implies that the Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Zarzuela is more efficient and that, therefore, patients obtain solutions to their healthcare problems without the need to return to the centre time and again.

1156 consultations, 44 surgeries and 3 births a day

On a normal day, 1156 people attend consultations in the centre (over 300,000 a year), 44 people (over 11,000 a year) undergo surgery, 154 people (over 55,000 a year) entrust their health to the professionals of the A&E department, which has a maximum waiting time of 15 minutes in 100 percent of cases, and 3 babies are delivered (over 1,000 a year). In this area, the Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Zarzuela deals with premature births with the maximum level of complexity through the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, which has the maximum accreditation with respect to the complexity of the cases with which it can deal and boasts professionals trained to manage births taking place even in week 28 of pregnancy.

The diagnostic and therapeutic arsenal of the Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Zarzuela is on a par with the best in the world. The centre has the Robotic Surgery Institute, with the most advanced surgical system in the world, the da Vinci system, with which it has already performed over 400 procedures. Its determination to incorporate the most advanced techniques have led it to incorporate within its technological portfolio all the advances making it possible to care for patients more effectively, as is the case with femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, obesity surgery with the POSE technique, transoral robotic surgery or even the Google Glass. With respect to the multidisciplinary units of reference, the centre has designed an oncology circuit for the comprehensive care of patients through the Cancer Care and Advice, Women's Oncology, Oncohaematology and Bone Marrow Transplant units.
