Allergology and Immunology Department

This is the medical specialism responsible for diagnosing and treating pathologies caused by allergies. An allergy is hypersensitivity to a certain substance which can be ingested, inhaled or touched producing a reaction with some characteristic symptoms. This allergic reaction can be triggered in 4 main components:

  • Allergen: Substance causing the allergy.
  • Immunoglobulin e (IgE) Antibody produced by the immune system in response to the allergen.
  • Mast cells: Special cells found on the skin and in the mucus organs (nose, eyes, mouth), full of histamine granules.
  • Histamine: Substance released in the allergic process and which is responsible for the symptoms of the allergy.
